The Bishop’s Day in Columbia District

Bishop-Holston13-1024x683

Bishop’s Day in the Columbia District:
“By Faith, On Mission, Together”

Saturday, October 21st
9:00am – 12:00pm
at
Shandon UMC
(3407 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205)

The one constant in today’s world is constant change. In the midst of that change, God has called us to the eternal work of making disciples for the transformation of the world. Your local church leadership team is invited to spend a morning with Bishop Holston thinking about how we equip our congregations to walk faithfully into God’s vision for God’s church. Teams will have opportunity to hear what churches are learning from the Forward Focus process, and the day will close with Holy Communion as we celebrate our connection to one another and to Jesus Christ.

All pastors are invited to bring up to five (5) elected leaders and/or potential leaders. This may include Church Council Chair, Lay Leader, Vision Committee Chair, and other potential leaders who are enthusiastic and committed. Bishop Jonathan Holston will be leading us in discernment about reaching our full potential and seeking a hopeful future.

At the end of the event, churches will be asked to consider entering into a process designed to guide the local church leadership team in gathering data and information necessary to reflect on the ministry potential and vitality of your church. Expected outcomes of the Bishop’s Forward Focus include: 1. Clear idea of next steps for your congregation, 2. An informed discernment of God’s will for your congregation, and 3. Reclaim a healthy process for the how the congregation should work.

TO SIGN UP FOR THE EVENT, complete online registration here or contact Veronica Williams in the District Office (803-786-9486 or codist@umcsc.org). The registration deadline is October 16th. For additional info, contact Betty Void at betty0629@att.net or 803-447-0626.

“Tune-up Day” for Reaching New People

“Tune-up Day” for Reaching New People

Saturday, October 1st
9:00am – 3:00pm
at
Brookland UMC
(541 Meeting Street, West Columbia, SC 29169)

A group of congregations from the Hartsville, Columbia and Rock Hill Districts, having attended a February 2016 workshop on “Reaching New People”, have been working for the past six months on implementing what they have learned. They will gather at Brookland UMC on October 1st for a mid-year “Tune Up Day” with their Coach, Rev. Paul Nickerson.

Each church will be bringing more leaders to this event; they will be receiving additional training, and then will be working on a new six-month Action Plan. They will continue to receive long-distance coaching for the coming six months. The goal of this process is for each church to get out into the community, build relationships with people and invite and bring them into the life of the church. Pastors who are in the coaching group need to register.

TO SIGN UP FOR THE EVENT, complete online registration here or contact Veronica Williams in the District Office (803-786-9486 or codist@umcsc.org).

Bishop’s BBQ Bash: UPDATE

Bishop’s BBQ Bash Rescheduled

Saturday, March 19

9:00am to 2:00pm
at
Trinity UMC Blythewood
(90 Boney Road, Blythewood, SC 29016)

District-wide Dear Pastors and Church Lay Leaders:

We are blessed to have a bold, compassionate, and committed leader in Bishop Jonathan Holston. Last year, he visited every District during the Bishop’s Road Show. For 2015-2016, the Bishop is visiting every District for the Bishop’s Barbecue Bash. The Columbia District BBQ Bash will be March 19, at Trinity UMC in Blythewood, 9:00am – 2:00pm. Registration/gathering will be 8:30-9:00am. The focus of the Bishop’s BBQ Bash is to empower pastors and laity for creative and effective partnership and leadership. It is Bishop Holston’s hope and expectation that EVERY pastor participate, and bring a team of 3 leaders. This team may include the Lay Leader, Church Council Chair, and the SPRC Chair. We encourage the pastor to bring an emerging leader, who can replace any of those on the suggested list. Because of space limitations at Chapin UMC, the pastor may only bring 3 leaders. Even for a multi-church charge, a pastor may only bring 3 leaders total from the charge. If there are multiple pastors on staff, the senior pastor should attend, and if unable, he or she may delegate to an associate.

Register your by completing the on-line registration here* If you previously registered for the original January 23rd date, you do NOT need to re-register. I look forward to March 19, as we learn from our Bishop and one another how to strengthen the church for making disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

With Thankfulness for your leadership,
Rev. Dr. Cathy Jamieson-Ogg and the Columbia District Leadership Team

*Register online or contact Veronica Williams in the District Office (codist@umcsc.org or 803-786-9486) with the total number who plan to attend from your church.
